Federal Government Announces 84 Transitional Homes in Hamilton, 33 in Sault Ste. Marie
The federal government made housing announcements in both Hamilton and Sault Ste. Marie yesterday as part of its ongoing Build Canada Homes initiative. In Hamilton, the federal government announced over $35 million in funding to build 84 transitional homes. In Sault Ste. Marie, nearly $13 million was announced through the federal Affordable Housing Fund for a 33-unit transitional housing complex at 259 Great Northern Road, developed in partnership with Missanabie Cree Business Limited Partnership. The complex will house individuals and families transitioning into permanent housing, with construction expected to begin soon and occupancy anticipated in March 2027. Newswire.ca + 2
Both announcements represent the federal government’s continued effort to distribute housing investments across mid-sized cities while deploying supportive and transitional housing as a frontline homelessness intervention. The Hamilton project follows a federal-municipal model that has become a template for the Carney government’s Build Canada Homes delivery approach.
Why it matters: These announcements reflect the federal government’s pivot toward funding smaller, faster-turnaround projects in non-Toronto markets — a deliberate counterbalance to earlier criticism that federal housing investments were concentrated in major metros. The Sault Ste. Marie announcement is also notable for its Indigenous development partnership, aligning with the federal government’s reallocation of Indigenous housing funding under the Spring Economic Update.
